Who does your trustee work for?

Rising Tide LP offers administrative trustee services to First Nations. We are an independent, impartial partner, not affiliated with any financial institution. We don't manage money, and we don't lend money. Our only business is looking after the trust.

The firm

We are the one party in a trust's structure with nothing to sell, and no one to answer to but the Nation.

Rising Tide doesn't manage the money and doesn't lend it, and we're owned by no institution. Our only job is to make sure the trust is administered exactly as the Nation intended, for as long as it lasts.

Why Rising Tide

The advantage of a truly independent trustee

Independence is more than avoiding conflicts. It is what lets us bring a Nation the experience, the options, and the leverage that an in-house bank trustee cannot.

Independence

We have nothing to sell you

No institutional owner. We don't manage money and we don't lend it, and we earn nothing from the institutions that serve your trust. So when we assess a manager's performance or push on fees, we have no stake in the answer.

Decades inside Indigenous trusts

Our founder spent more than 30 years in the law, administration, and governance of First Nations trusts, and Stian Andersen brings 20 years partnering with institutional investors. We know how these structures succeed, and how the old model fails: when the trustee and the investment manager sit in the same institution, and no one independent is reviewing the work.

03
Expanded opportunities
Expanded opportunities

More options, and the leverage to use them

Because we're independent, we can take a trust's capital wherever it is best served and negotiate on its behalf. We can run a full competitive process among institutions, or open a turnkey path to a vetted US investment platform. Either way, we earn nothing from the choice.

Why we exist

A model worth redesigning

Rising Tide was founded in 2025, after three decades of watching trustee services delivered through a model that could be built to better fit Indigenous interests, values, and ways of governing.
IndependentOwned by no institution, aligned only with the Nation.
AccountableBound by the trust deed, not by a sales target.

The process

How we're appointed, and how institutions get chosen

The Nation is in control at every step. We're engaged through an open process, and the institutions that manage the money compete for the mandate.

01

A competitive process

The Nation runs an open process with Chief and Council to choose its administrative trustee, on its own terms.

02

The Nation appoints Rising Tide

We're engaged as administrative trustee, accountable to the Nation and to the trust deed, not to any financial institution.

03

Institutions compete for the mandate

Investment managers bid for the work. We help the Nation run that process; we don't sit on either side of it.

Who reviews the investments? An independent party who doesn't stand to profit from them.
How we're structured

The Nation sits at the top. Everyone else competes.

The Trust holds the assets and the Nation holds the Trust. Every other role is a service provider appointed to it, including us, and each one selected through a competitive process run with Chief and Council.

Scope

What we do, and what we don't

Our role is deliberately bounded. Everything inside it protects the trust; everything outside it is someone else's job, on purpose.

Rising Tide services: within scope

  • Hold and protect the trust property
  • Administer the trust according to the trust deed
  • Maintain trust registers and beneficiary records
  • Coordinate with the custodian and the financial institution
  • Process payments and administer cash flow
  • Liaise with external accountants and tax advisors
  • Monitor the trust against its Investment Policy Statement
  • Transparent reporting: trust balance, investment performance, expenses, distributions

Rising Tide services: outside scope

  • Choose investments or select assets
  • Build or rebalance a portfolio
  • Exercise discretion over distributions
  • Determine eligibility; the list of eligible members comes from the First Nation
  • Give investment or suitability advice to members
  • Manage money
  • Lend money

Our administration is operational and ministerial. We follow the trust deed and lawful instruction from the Nation, nothing more, on purpose. Where a boundary isn't clear, ask us and we'll put the answer in writing.

Built to last

A trust is meant to outlive the people who set it up.

We administer it for the members here today, and for the generations not yet born.

Our team

The people accountable for the work

Our Founder

Founder & Managing Partner

Our founder spent more than 30 years working on the legal, administrative, and governance requirements specific to Indigenous trusts, and was instrumental in negotiating over $4 billion in settlements for First Nations across Canada. They founded Rising Tide in 2025, after three decades of watching trustee services delivered through a model they believed could be redesigned to better align with Indigenous interests, values, traditions, and ways of governing.

Hashu Remtulla

Fractional CFO & Controller

Hashu is a Certified Management Accountant with 20 years as a senior finance executive, advising Canadian and international businesses across oil and gas services, manufacturing, retail, and construction. His work spans financial statement preparation under IFRS and ASPE, corporate audits, budgeting, and mergers and acquisitions, reporting to C-suites and boards throughout. At Rising Tide he owns the financial controls and reporting that trust administration rests on: the records, the reconciliations, and the audits that let a Nation check our arithmetic.

Eric Harford

Strategic Advisor

Eric holds a Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies from Western University and is currently a CFA candidate. He came to this work through an internship at Maurice Law, where he saw the legal and governance machinery behind Indigenous settlements up close, and he also works with Turning Stone Group, a First Nations-focused investment firm. At Rising Tide he supports strategy and research, and helps prepare the materials Nations use to weigh their options.

Stian Andersen

VP, Business Development & Investment Oversight

Stian has spent 20 years in the investment and financial industry, primarily partnering with institutional investors (First Nations, endowments and foundations, insurers, pension plans, and corporations) to meet their investment objectives while managing risk, liquidity, and income requirements. He spent most of the last two decades at insurance-based asset management firms, and joined Rising Tide from one of the largest investment consultants in the world. Stian holds a Master of Arts in International Business and has held the Chartered Investment Manager designation since 2011.

Administrative support team Day-to-day trust administration (records, payments, member enquiries) is handled by our administrative support team, working directly under the people above.
